SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the Director of Advising & Counseling
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Military Veterans Services Advisor/Counselor is a part-time, year-round position and will serve as an advisor and advocate to veteran students; provide admissions, academic, career, transfer, financial aid, and counseling to all veterans; coordinate and schedule workshops; refer veteran students to external organizations and agencies; track and monitor students’ progress; prepare program and budget reports; act as liaison between students, faculty, and administrators; coordinate program evaluation; and participate in College activities aimed at improving the campus climate for veteran students. This will include veteran-friendly services and an increased awareness on campus to the educational challenges and needs of veteran students.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
1. Serves as Veterans’ Affairs Counselor (i.e. – verifies enrollment status on weekly basis and updates with Veterans Administration Regional Office).
2. Provides academic advisement to veterans (i.e. – participates in phases of student registration; advises incoming students; advises students in course selection and registration; conducts conferences and makes recommendations; refers students to appropriate support services and resources).
3. Counsels students in GI benefits procedures.
4. Organizes and conducts information workshops.
5. Serves as liaison to armed service recruiters from all branches.
6. Maintains Veterans Administration records.
7. Collaborates with the College Office of Communications to develop promotional material for outreach to community organizations, prospective student veterans, and the College community both on-line and in print.
8. Performs administrative tasks associated with department activities.
9. Operates a computer and utilizes word processing, database, spreadsheet, desktop publishing, Internet, or other software programs.
10. Interacts with various agencies/individuals (i.e. – attends meetings and participates on committees; communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, students, faculty members, employers, community organizations, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals) to coordinate activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

10. Identifies external community-based organizations serving veterans and establish a network to recruit veterans to the college.
11. Maintains professional knowledge in applicable areas.
12. Streamlines communications and processes to provide a more seamless transition for veterans to the College.
13. Assess unique veteran’s needs and collaborate with other College departments to implement teaching, learning and support strategies to increase veteran student success.
14. Consult with veterans regarding their academic concerns and assist them in accessing internal and external resources to address their needs; serve as a veteran student advocate
15. Develop programs and activities for members of the College community that increase their understanding of the needs of student veterans
16. Maintain knowledge of federal and state legislation, rules, policies and procedures pertaining to veteran student benefits.
17. Maintain records in conjunction with other certifying officials that comply with federal and state requirements, and prepare records for corresponding audits.
18. Maintain data and prepare reports on veteran student enrollment and success
19. Pursue external funding opportunities to enhance services to veteran students in collaboration with the College Grant Office.
20. Serves on appropriate College committees and task force groups.
21. Other duties as assigned.
1. Two (2) years’ experience that includes academic advising and/or veterans counseling.
2. Experience maintaining records to document and/or update information in written or electronic form. Knowledge of privacy laws and confidentiality issues such as FERPA (Family Education Rights & Privacy Act) and related legislation.
3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
4. Computer Skills: MS Office Suite: Ability to create, format, edit, preview, print, and save documents; use standard functions to select, edit, copy, paste, format, and spell check. Ability to navigate the Internet to find and download information.
5. Uses critical thinking skills to assess and respond to situations; identify and respond to the unique needs of each student; effectively identify and implement solutions.
6. Ability to learn military protocol to effectively respond to needs of military-affiliated population.
7. Current or prior military experience and/or knowledge of military community structure, protocol, procedures, and the challenges facing veterans transitioning to civilian and student life.
8. Current knowledge of veterans Educational Benefits.
9. Current knowledge of resources for veterans and their families.
10. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
SALARY: Military Veterans Services Counselor/Advisor
P/T MCCC non-benefited Unit position
$25.95/hour; 18 hours week
